The Golden Gate Business Association

The party’s almost here. Tomorrow night, November 12th the Golden Gate Business Association will be celebrating 35 Years of LGBT and LGBT-friendly Business advocacy in San Francisco.  Join us at the Hard Rock Cafe on Pier 39 from 8PM – Midnight. Your $35 advance-purchase ticket covers food, drinks, dancing and live performances–including a special appearance comedian, Marga Gomez, named “Best Comedian 2009″ by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

The event also features a live auction with two pieces of LGBT history: A full-size Castro St Pride Flag as well as a limited edition copy of the California Supreme Court ruling from May 5, 2008 allowing same-sex marriage and signed by San Franciso Mayor Gavin Newsom and City Attorney Dennis Herrera.

On Tuesday  night over 65 LGBT and LGBT-friendly business people, entrepreneurs,  non-profit employees and corporate partners attended the Golden Gate Business Association’s October Make Contact event at Spectrum Federal Credit Union. The evening’s highlights included

• presentation of a $3200 check to Christina Velasco, principal of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy from GGBA’s Business Expo fund raiser in June
• conclusion of GGBA’s 2010 Board Elections (newest board members to be announced tomorrow

The GGBA will host Matt Skallerud, social marketing guru, at its next Talk of the Town Speaker Series next Tuesday evening, September 15th. Attendees will learn how to leverage social marketing media and Web 2.0 tools like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to target their specific audience.

Presented by Joie de Vivre Hospitality and Southwest Airlines, the Talk of the Town’s program consists of networking while enjoying quality hors d’oeuvres and cocktails and then moving into the presentation promptly at 6pm.

About the Workshop: The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) has initiated the Earthquake Safety Program (ESP) to upgrade vulnerable portions of the original BART system to ensure safety for the public and BART employees. Portions of the original system with the highest traffic will be upgraded not only for life safety but also to ensure that they can return to operation shortly after a major earthquake. The estimated duration for design and construction of the entire program is approximately 10 years. The total project budget for the Earthquake Safety Program is $1,307 million (in 2004 dollars).

Small business participation on ESP construction projects is an important part of this program. BART has prepared a series of outreach meetings focused on increasing small business participation on Earthquake Safety Program construction contracts. Mr. James Fang, Vice President of the BART Board of Directors, and his team will address the specifics of the program, procedures for doing business with BART, upcoming community based outreach events and the type and amount of construction opportunities available on upcoming contracts.
