Authenticity with the LGBTQ Community
Host Trevor Rappleye got a chance to sit down with Sabrina Kent, the Senior Vice President at the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce to discuss the importance of authenticity within the LGBTQ community.Kent starts by talking about how her queerness went from being a struggle to a benefit. She talks about how it gave her the opportunity to meet different people and be more authentic with herself and the people around her. “I really hated myself and wished things would be easier,” she explains, “and now I wouldn’t change my queerness for anything in the world.”She then talks about the characteristics that make a person fascinating and interesting and how that can work as a benefit in the world of business. Keeping in mind that queerness can be something that sets a person apart, she urges, “Instead of trying to hide it, celebrate it.”Rappleye then chimes in mentioning how he promotes a culture of acceptance in his business saying, “We really push authenticity, being fun, awkward and memorable.”Kent capitalizes on the importance of this type of culture saying, “It’s all about who your surround yourself with and if you can’t bring your full self to that space, it’s probably not the space for you.”
