The GGBA Hires Activist to Lead Post-Pandemic Growth Strategy

The Golden Gate Business Association (GGBA) presents activist and LGBTQ+ leader, Terry Beswick, as the association’s new Executive Director. Beswick moved into this role officially on October 15, 2021, to guide the GGBA’s plans to expand and grow in the upcoming years.  “Terry was a standout candidate for executive director because of his expertise in community service leadership, team management, and passion for supporting small businesses owned by LGBTQ+ people and allies,” said Michael Gunther, president of the GGBA board.

Beswick has over 30 years of experience in nonprofit and service-oriented community leadership. His varied experience ranges from serving as executive director of the GLBT Historical Society, advocating for multiple AIDS activist groups, working as a journalist, and leading campaigns. Additionally, he co-founded the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District and co-chaired the LGBTQ Cultural Heritage Strategy. 

When asked to comment on his role as the new director, Beswick stated “I’m so proud of the work the GGBA has done over the years, and I am so excited to work with all of our members and prospective members, to hear their concerns and figure out how best we can meet their needs as we move out of the pandemic and into the 2020s.” 

Beswick’s impressive background shows that he is an effective spokesperson and multi-faceted professional with expertise in values-driven strategic planning and team management.  “I think Terry is a great fit to step into this position of executive director,” said Gunther, “and I look forward to seeing how he brings the GGBA’s vision to fruition in the upcoming years.” Beswick’s experience in project management and his focus on meaningful inclusion of diverse communities are just two of the skills that are expected to benefit the GGBA as they implement their five-year vision plan. 

The GGBA has set out several initiatives for the next several years, including building up the organizational structure with more staff and volunteers, collaborating with other minority chambers, and creating more educational events. With Beswick on board as the new director, the GGBA will continue to move toward its mission to champion opportunity, development, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ and allied business community. 

“I believe that by making the GGBA and all our member businesses stronger, we will lift up the whole community, and make the Bay Area a safer, healthier, more creative, and fabulous place for residents and visitors alike,” added Beswick.
